NSW Surf Life Saving Championships 2012

I had the privilege of attending the Surf Boat events held at Fingal Beach on 9th March, 2012 and have assembled a lightbox featuring the highlights of the day. Although there was only a moderate swell, the double break made conditions challenging for the competitors. The level of fitness displayed by the athletes was enough to make an aging photographer wistful for his younger days.

Gannets and Mountains

Back in Sydney again after my 5 weeks working in NZ. It doesn't seem to matter how many times I go there, there are always some great photo opportunities. This time the highlights photographically were Mt Cook National Park by air and boat (on the Tasman Lake with its impressive icebergs) aerial shots of the glacial river systems and the fantastic Australasian Gannets at the only mainland breeding colony in the world,at Cape Kidnappers in Hawkes Bay.

Mulhern Waste Oil depot Fire Aftermath

The fire, at the Mulhern Waste Oil depot in Wingfield, a suburb about 12km north of the city's CBD.
People within 150m of the fire were evacuated.

Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast 2012

Sunday 4th March saw the finals contested by some of the best surfboard riders in the world at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast. The men's event was won by Taj Burrow and the women's by Stephanie Gilmore, both from Australia against some stiff overseas competition. Check out my lightbox for highlights of the day's action, plus a selection of images featuring the many spectators, some of whom had travelled from overseas to support their countrymen and women.
